Shalom means a greeting of Hello and goodbye……..go in peace…… so I wish my VERY good Chavers Steven & Bev Adler Shalom, as they start their new journey of life in Israel………
Going back 40 years, I remember being called by Steven to a meeting to discuss a Simchat Torah dinner @ Glenhazel Shul (Yeshiva College)……. I did not really know Steven, BUT……from that first meeting we became Chavers, and I went on to cater all the Chagim at the Shul for the next 30 years…….We actually sent a Menu for the first one, and cannot ever remember doing another quote in writing….. It was always verbal…. And he left everything up to me, once the Price was settled….. Must be 30 years ago, he started the Zayn Adar dinner, while I was still at the ‘old’ Jewish Guild, and he said he wanted to honour the Staff of the Chevra, and I said I would donate the dinner, and his reply was NO….after a Lot of haggling, the price was set at R10 pp, which went on until I retired…. You don’t get that anywhere and when we retired from Stan & Pete Caterers in 2000, Steven organized the most E-mazing Farewell for us at the Sandton Sun …..
Steven & Bev were involved with the Yeshiva College/Glenhazel Shul for close on 50 years, and Steve was the Chairman, etc, etc many times, and Bev was in the office for many, many years……Steven is also the Honorary Life President of the Chevra Kadisha, and devoted soooooooo much of his time to West Park Cemetery, and was always around on Sunday, to cheer everyone up……. Eishhhhhhhh, he would tell jokes that were E-mazing, and seemed to lift the ‘Spirits’ if you know what I mean…..
His Sterling work at the Cemetery will surely be missed…..
Steven & Bev have moved to ‘Ranananafontein’, Israel to join their Kinderlach, Johnathan & Hayley…….. who I know very well…..Did their Bar/Bat mitzvahs, and went to Israel for 3 days for Johnathan’s Chasene and was at Hayley’s Chasene….Managed to attend on of Jonathan’s Zunnelle’s Barmitzvah in Israel 3 years ago………. Although there move is sad for all of us, I believe it is quite E-mazing that they are joining their Kinderlach & Einingklach, in the Promised Land …
I could write a book on various ‘Meisa’s’ with Steve & Me……!!!!!!!
Shalom my friends, BUT ….. Not really Farewell…..
This is the 18th. Year of “STAN THE GOOD SHABBOS MAN”,
I have asked readers to donate any denomination of Chai to the Chevra Kadisha to commemorate the Chai year…..
The Chev have sent me a link….you can pay online, https://www.helpinghands.co.za/donate/ …
Have any queries, just E-mail me at Smookler@netactive.co.za
Why The Chev..??? The Chevra Kadisha has been the back bone behind the ‘Yiddisher’ community in the ‘Beloved Country ‘ for over a 100 years,
and takes care of soooooo many communal things, that many take for granted……. The care of the aged, the young in need, funerals, etc, etc……
As I have always said “Every Charity is worthwhile’ ,BUT….. In these times the Chevra Kadisha needs funds more than ever,
so if you would like to make a “ CHAI’ donation in any configuration whether it is $18, or R1,800, it would be appreciated
