Wolmarans Street Shul in its Heyday…………
Wolmarans Street Shul was the biggest, wealthiest and most prestigious Jewish congregation in Johannesburg in the first half of the twentieth century.
Usually filled by 50 or so people but more on high holidays, the service was conducted by a notable chazan and choir.
When the congregation moved to the Northern Suburbs to a new facility, the building was taken over by the present congregation of the Revelation Church of G-d
I went on a walking tour of "A Journey through a Jewish Shtetl ~ Doornfontein Revisited", today.
The most unbelievable experience was visiting The old Wolmarans St Shul, which has become The Revelation Church of G-d ..
Today was a small gathering, only 10,000 people. They usually have 30,000 people on a Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. These are the "healing" days.
People line the streets for many many blocks all around the church. I hope you can see something of it in my photos.
Also notice the Hebrew High School on the other side of the shul. On the other days, thousands of people come "to study"
This is the church of Prophet Radebe (who has African, Jewish and a small bit of Christianity in his prophecy).
I have never been in such a large crowd before but felt safe all the time. What really affected me was the thousands of people in the church with not nearly enough air!
I have taken a few pictures that I will include. Try to "see and feel" the impact of the 10,000 people.
Just to mention that there were dying people, people in wheel chairs and also very ill people attending.
Prophet Radebe preaches where the ark was. (Notice the African throne and all the old Magen David's).
There are TV screens with hundreds of people in all the rooms that were offices etc.
He speaks thru a microphone and can be heard for miles.
